Upcoming park closures

Seventy California State parks stand to close on July 1, 2012. Permanently.

Bay Area parks (with hiking trails) affected:
Bale Grist Mill
Benicia SR
Candlestick Point SR
Gray Whale Cove SB

Local park advocacy and management groups are working to keep some parks open.

Samuel P. Taylor will be managed by NPS
Tomales Bay will be managed by NPS
Jack London will be managed by Valley of the Moon Natural History Association
Bothe Napa Valley and Bale Grist Mill will be (hopefully) kept open by Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District
Henry Coe will (hopefully) be kept open by the Pine Ridge Association
Austin Creek will (hopefully) be kept open by the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods
Even now, our state's woeful budget is affecting park access.
At Tomales Bay State Park, Hearts Desire, Shell Beach, and Millerton Point parking and day use areas have been closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays since October.
Olompali has been closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays since October.
Jack London will be closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays starting December.
Sugarloaf State Park will be closed from December-February.

Several websites offer suggestions and seek your support:

If you value California State Parks, please help any way you can.

  1. Hi All,

There's an auction fundraiser to for Castle Rock State Park this month, on Wednesday March 21st at 7:30pm at Planet Granite Sunnyvale. Come support one of the bay area’s favorite crags!!! There’s going to be climbing gear, camping gear, wine and two sweet Novaro bikes!

Planet Granite is pledging to match up to $10,000 raised at their Auction Fundraiser on March 21st! This is where you can help to make this Auction a success. We are reaching out to the communities that use Castle Rock Park to help donate goods and services to be auctioned off this night. All funds raised will be matched, making your $1 donation $2. The night will include prominent speakers from the climbing community and a silent auction fundraiser!
